HECU Multi-Fuse Replacement Recall

Frequently Ask Questions

Kia is conducting a safety recall campaign for certain vehicles equipped with the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU), which controls the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control System (ESC) and Traction Control System (TCS) in the vehicle. The HECU could malfunction internally and cause an electrical short over time, potentially resulting in an engine compartment fire.

There is a risk of an engine compartment fire, even when the vehicle is turned off, as the circuit is constantly powered. This could increase the possibility of an accident, serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.

The short circuit does not affect the functioning of the brake system itself.

Kia will be fitting a new fuse into the main junction box on all affected vehicles.

Kia will send a letter to all owners of the affected vehicles by mail notifying them of the issue.

Upon receipt of the notification letter, owners are to contact their Kia dealer to arrange for the repair to be performed. Until the repair is conducted, we recommend that the vehicle is parked outside and away from structures and other vehicles when it is not being driven.

No. The repair will be free of charge.

The repair will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

We recommend contacting your nearest Kia dealer to book in to have the repair conducted as soon as possible. However, there have been no instances of the fault occurring in Kia vehicles in Australia that we are aware of, and very few instances in foreign markets. You can continue to drive your vehicle as normal, unless you have warning lights already on display in which case you should have the vehicle inspected immediately.
